Barite — natural sulfate of barium (BaSO4). The main technological properties defining a wide range of industrial use of barite — the high density (4.3-4.6 g/cm3), chemical inertness, low hardness (small abrasivity), ability to absorb the x-ray radiation, high content of barium, a whiteness. Barite is applied, generally as a weighting compound of boring solutions (70% of world consumption); forms the best basis in production of color paints; the special cements steady in hostile environment; the "heavy" concrete applied in the bases of heavy designs when laying pipelines in boggy places and under water; in road construction; for receiving a strong and flexible layer of the top coverings of paths at the airports. The chemical industry applies barite in production of the salts of barium used in various industries.
